pillcam-eso2.jpgSince endoscopes have been around us for quite a long time now, the title of this blog may seem to spell out the truth better. But, I must say, the definitely makes a big difference as it has been designed specially to examine the inner lining of the esophagus. Recently, PillCam ESO 2 has got the approval from the FDA. Very soon, the capsule endoscope will be promoted via InScope, which is a branch of a Johnson & Johnson company. The capsule has been made by Given Imaging Limited of Israel. PillCam ESO 2 is way to easy to get work; you just need to swallow the tiny cam and let the little lined up on both ends to start clicking away.

Three sensor arrays are fixed on the patient’s chest at well-strategic places. These arrays are then subsequently connected to a data recorder that is worn on a belt around the waist. After gulping this cam capsule, the patient must lie down, where he/she needs to be raised in a series of inclinations within a duration of 5 minutes. By doing this, PillCam ESO 2 will travel throughout the entire via those peristaltic waves, flashing up to 14 times per second. Each flash is strong enough to capture the view of the inner lining of the esophagus.

This journey of results into several pictures that are used to recognize the potential abnormalities, for example (the inflammation of the lining of the esophagus). Moreover, it will help doctors to determine the severity of symptoms and even hit and treat the esophageal ulcers in their more extreme cases. During this 5 minutes process, captured snaps will be sent out to the sensor arrays from where they are transferred onto the DataRecorder. While doing all this, the patient is asked to walk around freely or stay seated for at least 15 minutes to make sure that PillCam has traveled the entire length and breadth of the esophagus. Once the job is done, the PillCam ESO 2 will be excreted naturally, without bothering your body system. No doubt, this tiny is going to ease medical sciences to a significant extent.

This is really interesting technology. I wonder if they can use it to examine your entire digestive system? Sure beats the 22 rifle treatment working from the other end!

I’m sort of confused. Why would they only use this for esophageal work? Wouldn’t the camera ALSO be strong enough to take close photos of other parts of the digestive system?

Yes, I would think that the pill could also do the digestive system as well.
