I have used Archos PVRs for a while. My last was the AV420. I honestly don’t see the purpose for them anymore unless you are traveling or commuting a lot. Mine collects dust.
And I don’t care for comparisons of every new touch-screen gadget to the iPhone as though the iPhone is threatened. It’s a phone, this is a PVR. From the Archos site, I cannot even play their Steve Jobs wannabe videos.
Just because this has wi-fi (very difficult to find solid, open wi-fi spots even in NYC) and Flash support doesn’t mean I NEED those things. A Tivo has more features than my DVR, but my DVR serves its purpose for me. Likewise, the iPhone serves its purpose for me. I miss 3G and Flash to-go, but I don’t want a brick in my pocket just to have it.
Now, if this Archos 5 Gen has a multiple purpose, like if I can use it as a hard drive and external monitor for my Canon XH A1 camcorder — consider it sold. But on the strength of Wi-Fi and PVR alone? Nah. I have Slingbox to sling my DVR programs wherever I am.
